mind & body WELLNESS

“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a

bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”

-Anaïs Nin

Meet Amanda Doty, LMFT

Welcome to Amanda Doty Counseling, where therapy is a space to slow down, reconnect, and feel supported exactly where you are.  Amanda Doty (she/they), MA, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist #53729, RYT-200. I offer individual psychotherapy for adults seeking deeper understanding, healing from trauma, and more ease in their relationships with others, themselves, their bodies, and food.

Located in Sacramento, California, I provide both in-person individual and group sessions and telehealth throughout California. My work is person-centered, grounded in warmth, curiosity, and respect for everyone’s unique story. Whether you are navigating eating disorder recovery, body image distress, trauma, or identity exploration, therapy can be a place to gently make sense of what feels overwhelming and begin moving toward lasting change.

As a trauma-informed and trauma-trained therapist, I believe healing happens not only through insight, but through felt experience — learning how safety, connection, and regulation can live in the body again.

I specialize working with adults and queer individuals navigating trauma and eating disorders. My approach is warm, grounded, and collaborative, and I strive to create a space where each individual feels seen, heard, and affirmed without judgment.

As an LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist, I welcome diverse identities, relationship structures, and lived experiences. I believe therapy works best when it feels authentic and human.

"Trauma is not what happens to you; it is what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you”

Gabor Maté

I offer trauma-focused therapy and eating disorder treatment in Sacramento and across California. I serve LGBTQ+ and adults who want to understand their nervous system, heal from past experiences, and find a renewed sense of wholeness.

Trauma Approach

My work is person-centered, trauma-informed, relational, and rooted in nervous system awareness. I integrate somatic therapy, parts work (IFS), and attachment-based approaches to help you gently process your experiences at your own pace. I recognize that each person has their own unique story, and as such, this requires a tailed approach to treatment.

We won’t just talk about what happened, we’ll work with how it’s still living in your body. Recognizing that this time and patience, trust and understanding.  Talk therapy engages the mind, it does not engage the stuck parts where trauma has been stored in the body. If this is something you experience we may try some somatic work together.

Learn More About Somatic Work

When traditional talk therapy feels like it only touches the surface, somatic therapy invites you to heal from the inside out. Since trauma and stress are often stored in our physical selves, we work directly with your nervous system to release deep-seated tension and restore a sense of calm.
In our sessions, we gently tune into your body’s sensations at your own pace, helping you move from a state of overwhelm to one of grounded resilience. By integrating tools like Somatic Experiencing and Trauma-Sensitive Yoga, we teach your body that it is safe to be in the present moment. This embodied journey isn't about forcing progress; it's about listening to your internal rhythm so you can move through the world with newfound freedom and ease.

Learn More About Trauma

Trauma lingers in the body as a quiet disconnection or a system stuck on high alert. These aren't weaknesses, but your body's intuitive way of protecting you during overwhelming times. You might experience persistent physical tension, difficulty resting, emotional withdrawal, or a feeling that true safety is elusive. Healing starts by meeting these responses with warmth rather than judgment. Together, we will create a compassionate space to honor your unique rhythm, helping your nervous system release old survival patterns and gradually return to a state of grounded, steady peace.
